When you use your rope, it gets fine particles of dirt and sand among the fibres. Not only that but it also accumulates little bits of aluminium off of the carabiners and hardware it runs through. These act like sandpaper to the threads on your rope which wears it out much faster if not cleaned. Not only that, but it can also act like sandpaper to your aluminium and steel climbing hardware as well.
